Lots of people are discovering the satisfaction of experiencing music of the 16th and early 17th century on its own terms - that is, not subject to performance practices or sonorities of later periods, but on suitable instruments, with appropriate tuning, fingering, bowing, and so on. And they are finding more movement, colour and communicative power in the process.

That is, very simply, where we as performers, audiences and participants can meet.

 renaissance?

In the Renaissance, music drew fresh breath between
the rigorous conventions of Gothic music and
the mannered conventions of the Baroque.

Admitted: Renaissance art pretended (most visibly in sculpture)
to call classical antiquity to life. But music has always told a story
from before the beginning of time.

During the Renaissance, composers were developing the possibilities of
reconciling each voice's freedom of movement with harmonic direction,
of integrating the expression of specific feelings (and sung words)
with the unutterable meaning of music.

All instrumental music started from vocal seed. The polyphony of the Renaissance was the garden in which it grew. Even when melody left parental patterns behind to take on instrumental idioms, the independence of lines remained a fundamental principle. The interaction of individual voices attained a unique social dimension,
as reflected in widespread and skilled amateur musicianship.
